Dear Crissy

My little boy is 2

You know, when your first child’s first birthday rolls around, the level of disbelief is hard to articulate. However, by the time they are turning two-years-old, and it feels as if you just wrapped up their previous party, you have begun to realize how fleeting these years really are.

Every cliché that you have ever heard about just how fast that time goes, well, it is sadly true. There is a mix of pain and pure joy that accompanies this truth, and really, your only choice in the matter is to let it happen, and try to make as many memories (and take as many photos as possible) along the way. There are times when you will feel like you are failing on both accounts, and well, I think that’s unavoidable too.

On August 3rd, Evan turned 2. There are so many things that I could say about how absolutely unique, special, and wonderful this kid is, but, I will just tell you that he is truly a jewel. This kid, this particular, sweet, caring, hard-working, intelligent, ornery kid was meant to be mine, and wow, I am conscious of how lucky I am for that every day.

So, I’ve used the word party to describe that day a couple of times, but in reality, we didn’t have much of a party this year due to my ongoing pregnancy-related sickness. I felt pretty guilty about that for a while, however, we still had a special day!

Forum Discussion: Do you feel like you HAVE to throw your children big birthday parties?

We’ve reached the stage where it’s almost impossible for me to get a good portrait of Evan. You know, one where he’s sitting relatively still, and smiling? The kid is almost always on the move!

I even took the easy route on Evan’s birthday cake this year, opting for one featuring heavy equipment, made at Kroger. Every kid needs a grocery store cake at least once though, right? He certainly seemed to be pleased with it!

I think that for Evan, blowing out two birthday candles is the memory that has been the most special from that day. He mentions blowing out the candles about once a day, it must have been a really fun experience for him.

Even though we had a pretty low-key celebration for Evan’s second birthday, it was still special. Next year at this time, I’ll have a little boy turning three, and an almost 8-month-old baby, which should be fun!

Happy 2nd birthday to my awesome Evan!

The great thing is that even though we feel guilty about having these mini parties, our kids still love being the center of attention and don’t know the difference. I did a small family party for Zachary’s 2nd birthday and am going to do the same for his 3rd as well! Why stress myself out when there will be so few memories of the event for the child (if any)? I figure when he is 4 and getting ready to start Pre-K will be when he wants a “real” party, you know? Happy birthday to Evan, and it looks like he had a great day! I love his excavator cake and simply can’t believe you are going to have an 8 month old at the time of his 3rd birthday, wow!

I love that he’s holding a stick in most of the photo’s. Such a boy! My boys are the same way. Photo time is over if you take away their stick. Happy birthday to your little guy!

Isn’t that hilarious. I think almost every photo of him from the past year, he’s holding a stick. I don’t try to fight it anymore LOL.

    Hi,

I wanted to wish sweet Evan a very happy second birthday! I hope you are feeling better now! My first two kids are 27 months apart and it is hard chasing after a fast little one (which I also had) while not feeling great. I am nauseous in all the months of my pregnancies!!! So, I can relate. I LOVE the pictures you captured, they were great! Some of the best photos are the ones that are “on the run” action kinds…

    Regards,

Sending you Happy 2nd birthday wishes Evan, all the way from Australia.
I planned this huge awesome party for Aston when he turned 1 a few months but I got so sick it didn’t happen! Luckily we had already had our own small family party for him on his actual birthday or we would have had no great memories at all.
Those years are just flying by and their birthdays tend to be a wake up call.
I hope you are feeling better soon too.

My son turned two in February and I now have a four-month-old as well. With their birthdays just two months apart I feel like I will be running around in circles for the rest of my life planning parties! It is crazy how fast the time flies. I love the pics and that cake is great!
