Cherry Blueberry Smoothie Bowl
This tasty smoothie bowl shouts summer to me! It’s a great mix of fresh local goodness combined with super foods, all served up in a perfectly chilled bowl. We’ve been on a real smoothie bowls kick lately and this cherry blueberry smoothie bowl recipe ranks high on our list of favorites.
Blueberries are considered a superfood for good reason. First off, they are low in calories but high in nutrients. They are also loaded with antioxidants which can protect our bodies from damage by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cellular structures and even contribute to diseases including cancer.
Cherries are actually antioxidant rich as well and can also help reduce belly fat. Three cheers for reducing belly fat!
This recipe calls for a mix of berries. I used cherries, blueberries and cranberries but you can certainly go with whichever frozen berries you have on hand. Freezing the berries ahead of time is important for the consistency of a smoothie bowl so that part is highly recommended.
Cherry blueberry smoothie bowl
2 cups frozen organic mixed berries. I used cherries, cranberries and blueberries.
1/2 of a tart summer apple.
Splash of water
raw unsweetened coconut
Blend the frozen fruit, fresh apple and water together until smooth. I like to make the smoothies for these bowls super thick so you can really scoop spoonful’s of it. For this start with a just a splash of water and add more as your blender might need it. Letting the berries sit for a few minutes before blending will help with this as well.
I topped the smoothie bowl with fresh blueberries and sour (they weren't actually sour though) cherries, about 1 teaspoon of chia seeds and about 2 teaspoons of raw unsweetened coconut per bowl. The frozen fruit mix will be enough for one larger bowl or two smaller ones. Mix in, line up, swirl or just dig into these toppings!
