very nice post! We have friends who have adopted children and it’s amazing how it changes the lives of both the adopting family and the adopted children! My friend adopted a child who was over 6 years old – for older children, it’s difficult to get adopted since most families prefer adopting infant/young babies. But it was a blessing for both my friend and the kid!

I teach adult learners and keep in touch with them long after graduation. One of my grads adopted a daughter from a woman who could not care for her, but still wanted to know her. It hes worked out well. The birth mom lives a couple States away but still gets photos and information inner daughter so she never has to wonder if she made the right choice.

Posted On July 23, 2012 at 10:55 am REPLY
    • I think that is how it should be! If I ever adopted a child, I would keep in touch with the birth mother if she was interested. I would also allow them to visit whenever they wished. I think it is important both for the biological mother and for the child. I wonder if there is any research in the field of Psychology about how it impacts their mental health.

Although I’ve never given up a child for adoption I do know a couple who adopted when unable to have children. Their lives are blessed by this child and the child has a great life, presumably that he would not have had if not adopted.

That is really wonderful! My mother opted for an abortion, instead of giving up her first child for adoption. She regretted that decision her whole life, and spent years trying to hide it from her other children. I think she would have been a lot better off, mentally, if she had chosen to have her baby and let some loving parents adopt him.

I’ve never given a child up for adoption and I don’t know if I’d ever be strong enough to make that choice, but both my sister and a close friend of mine gave babies up for adoption and I’ve seen how hard it was for them (and yet rewarding at the same time). I also know ladies who have struggled with infertility and have seen how wonderfully blessed they were to have been able to adopt a baby. Adoption is a very emotional decision and it will be interesting to see how this show handles this.

I think it would be incredibly difficult to go through pregnancy, feel your child moving inside you, and then go through the agony of labour …. only to pass off your child to another parent. It would be so easy to skip all of that, by having an abortion. I really believe that women who choose to carry their babies full-term and then have them adopted are heros! They are very brave …. and they truly demonstrate love for their child by making that selfless decision!

I wish more people who live in the US would adopt state-wide instead of going overseas to do it. We need to take care of our own before we think about helping other countries out.

Posted On July 23, 2012 at 1:51 pm REPLY

Perhaps we shouldn’t think of it in terms of helping other countries out, and instead look at it as helping a child out. Regardless of what lines on a map say, we are all human beings and anyone who is capable and willing to take in another helpless human being has my respect.

I completely agree. At least the children that are up for adoption in this country have plenty to eat, medical care,etc.. A lot of children needing homes in other countries aren’t so lucky. Choosing to adopt ANY child is an amazing thing.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that she hoped that this show would not exploit the parties involved. I share that concern as well. I’ve always disliked reality shows for this reason. I am hoping that because this is the Oxygen network that they will take a more sensitive, documentary approach and allow these stories to unfold naturally. It’s already a stressful event without cameras rolling. I am hoping this show won’t add any unnecessary drama.

I completely agree with you. I do not like reality shows because they are scripted and they tend to show either the best side or the worst side of those featured. Those who are featured in this show should consider this and think about how the child will view what is going to air when they are old enough to get on the internet and can find it on YouTube.

  33. The subject of adoption is very personal to me. My younger sister was adopted at just 10 weeks. I think it was such a selfless thing for her mother to give her up as she knew she couldn’t provide her with the life she needed, even though I am sure it was so hard to give her up. My sister is now 8 years old and I can’t imagine my life without her. My husband and I also want to adopt in the future.

I am glad that there are people who realize they cannot care for a child or do not want to have a child but are willing to give them to people who do want children. I would hope this show will feature a gay couple who are adopting, because it is still a struggle for gay men and women to jump through the hoops and adopt a child.

This show shows the strength of the woman carrying a baby for someone else. They are strong, courageous, and have the willness to help others. That is something that not everyone can do.

It would be cool to win and I think I’ll watch the show.
