My Kid is Weird *

Perhaps peculiar is a better word—wonderfully peculiar. I’m sure my kid isn’t the only one who would rather have some pots, pans, and wooden spoon to play with instead of an expensive toy. Or, in Evan’s case, a garden hose and the phone book. Can you just see the bliss on his sweet, ornery little face? Ah, the simple things!

My kids are the same way. Sometimes I wonder why buy toys just give them each a box. Outside they neglect their toys and play w/ the waterhose or try and climb the pecan tree. Its the simpliest things in life that bring joy to our children.

  2. Hey, I’m seriously thinking about wrapping bubble wrap, boxes with silk scarves, and just random items like that up for my 2-year-old for Christmas! haha It kills me that she has these cool toys but plays with… other things. ;-) She looooves my kitchen utensil drawer for example.

    This photo is SO adorable!

My son is obsessed with the hose as well, and he loves the broom. Those are his two favorite “toys” Gotta love the weird boys!

  4. He is so beautiful! I had to laugh remembering my best friend. On her son’s (my godson) first Christmas everyone told her “save your money” but she bought tons of presents and wrapped them all beautifully….yes, you guessed it…on Xmas morning all he wanted to do was bang some pans and put a few ribbons on his head. She cried most of the day.

  5. We would all save a lot of money if we just recycled our phone books and umm… ok garden hose…LOL

  6. LOL…oh yes…the pleasures of playing with items that are NOT toys. Logan’s favorite is the vacuum cleaner. He likes to pull off the attachments and use them as a spyglass, megaphone…oh you get the picture!

My nephews and daughter are the same way. They will play with everything else in the house except their toys. They especially love and I mean love boxes the bigger the better. I end up bringing boxes from work so they can play with the them.

  9. Certainly not the only one. My daughter convinces me that kids would be better off without all the toys we get them! Just think about it, they come into this world naturally curious and can play with the simplest things. But then we, the parents, buy them so much stuff and kill their imagination with on demand entertainment with buttons, sounds, flashing lights. Then we are also the ones complaining that when they are 10 they want all the latest toys. I don’t think the kids are to blame ;) My daughter loves my pots and pans, empty containers and boxes of all sorts! :)

  10. I call my Little Evan a weirdo all the time – but peculiar is SO much cuter I think I’ll use that instead. His current favorites include a book of knitting patterns (which he “reads” over and over) and a broken flowered headband. For Christmas I bought him his own tiny broom and dustpan – he is going to go NUTS with excitement.

  12. It’s a beautiful thing to be so content with so little.

Actually, there’s quite a bit in that pile. Never mind.

  13. I have the carseat box in my living room. I don’t have the heart to throw it away. Little Bit also loves any cord he can find and my husbands belt. Kids are so funny!

I have one of those kids, too. He loves loves loves plugs (extension cords), unplugged, of course. In fact, his first big potty present was an extension cord he got to pick from Canadian Tire – he was so proud. He’s eccentric but we love it (and him!). :)
