Protecting your identity during home buying process
Purchasing a new home can be one of the most exciting yet stressful times in our lives. It may be harder during this time to focus on taking extra precautions to protect your identity, and this month LifeLock shares a wealth of useful tips for staying safe when buying a new home — just play the LifeLock for Life Sweepstakes on Facebook to learn more.
A few of my favorite tips are surrounding the topic of paying bills by mail, by phone, or online while using a wi-fi connection. It is truly scary when you examine the many ways an identity thief can swipe your personal information. Here are a few great reminders from LifeLock.
Paying bills by mail
The safest way to pay your bills is to drop them off at a post office box. This way it is harder for identity thieves to intercept your bills and steal your information.
Paying bills over the phone
If you’re not out of earshot, an identity thief can easily write down the account information you’re dictating to your account representative. This could even be friends
or family members, which is called family friendly fraud.
Using public wi-fi
Using public Wi-Fi leaves you vulnerable and wide open to identity thieves who use free Wi-Fi to capture sensitive data and hack into mobile devices.
