The Charge: What Makes You Feel Alive? *

The subtitle to Brendan Burchard’s new book The Charge is: “Activating the 10 human drives that make you feel alive.”

According to the author, these drives include: the desire for more control, competence, congruence, caring, connection, change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness.

As I made my way through Burchard’s book The Charge, I found myself thinking a lot about one of these drives in particular — creative expression.

I’ve written a lot lately about my endeavor to reconnect with former passions and hobbies. As a busy mother of two young children, there are times when I feel a complete disconnect with my inner (creative) self, and according to Burchard it is vitally important to express yourself creatively every single day. He points out that a failure to do this can cause us unnecessary suffering and I know in my case that this is true.

Being reminded of this white reading The Charge has really caused a shift in my thinking lately. I see now that creative expression is important on a deeper, psychological level that can ultimately affect my overall health and happiness.

I do feel very lucky to have my blog as an outlet for creative expression. Being able to write and truly express my innermost thoughts and feelings helps keep me grounded, and quite honestly — sane.

There are so many more inspiring concepts in Brendan Burchard’s The Charge, and my desire to change (another one of the drives discussed in the book) and grow make this the perfect summer read for me.
