You know, when your first child’s first birthday rolls around, the level of disbelief is hard to articulate. However, by the time they are turning two-years-old, and it feels as if you just wrapped up their previous party, you have begun to realize how fleeting these years really are.
Every cliché that you have ever heard about just how fast that time goes, well, it is sadly true. There is a mix of pain and pure joy that accompanies this truth, and really, your only choice in the matter is to let it happen, and try to make as many memories (and take as many photos as possible) along the way. There are times when you will feel like you are failing on both accounts, and well, I think that’s unavoidable too.
On August 3rd, Evan turned 2. There are so many things that I could say about how absolutely unique, special, and wonderful this kid is, but, I will just tell you that he is truly a jewel. This kid, this particular, sweet, caring, hard-working, intelligent, ornery kid was meant to be mine, and wow, I am conscious of how lucky I am for that every day.
So, I’ve used the word party to describe that day a couple of times, but in reality, we didn’t have much of a party this year due to my ongoing pregnancy-related sickness. I felt pretty guilty about that for a while, however, we still had a special day!
Forum Discussion: Do you feel like you HAVE to throw your children big birthday parties?
We’ve reached the stage where it’s almost impossible for me to get a good portrait of Evan. You know, one where he’s sitting relatively still, and smiling? The kid is almost always on the move!
I even took the easy route on Evan’s birthday cake this year, opting for one featuring heavy equipment, made at Kroger. Every kid needs a grocery store cake at least once though, right? He certainly seemed to be pleased with it!
I think that for Evan, blowing out two birthday candles is the memory that has been the most special from that day. He mentions blowing out the candles about once a day, it must have been a really fun experience for him.
Even though we had a pretty low-key celebration for Evan’s second birthday, it was still special. Next year at this time, I’ll have a little boy turning three, and an almost 8-month-old baby, which should be fun!
Happy 2nd birthday to my awesome Evan!
