I’d like to thank RITZ for sponsoring this post.
Vacation is a wrap, the summertime birthday balloons have deflated and my kids are a bit gloomy about having to start school next week. It’s why I decided to surprise them on a regular Tuesday afternoon with an awesome and slightly random Farewell to Summer Celebration!
Why did I invent a Farewell to Summer Celebration? Because I’m a cool mom (most of the time) and I make the rules, that’s why!
Instead of being bummed about summer break coming to a close, I flipped the script and turned a regular weekday into a delicious, and super-fun going away party of sorts. Bon voyage, summertime. You were very good to us, but now it’s time to start our fall adventure.
When you think about it, you can really turn any event big or small into a celebration. It all comes down to having the people we love near and finding joy in the little things. Speaking of joyful little things, our party cuisine was so simple to whip up but such a delight to eat. I wanted to create a recipe that represented everything sweet and fantastic about summer.
Juicy ripe strawberries were a must, plus whipped cream and sprinkles (just because they are fun), all on top of a crispy RITZ Cracker. Our Farewell to Summer Celebration food was yummy, cute and no-fuss and everything that summertime food should be!
The kids got in on the food prep action by helping me top the RITZ Cracker with strawberries, whipped cream and sprinkles.
RITZ adds a little extra richness to life, and certainly helped inspire my simple but special party for the kids.
Have you ever invented a reason to celebrate with your friends and family? If you haven’t, I challenge you to seek out those small moments in life and transform them into a special moment for your family. Whether it’s your child getting his or her braces, mom getting a promotion at work or maybe even the family pet’s birthday, there is always a reason to celebrate. Don’t know when your pet’s birthday is? Make it up—I won’t tell! :)
I’m loving this commercial from RITZ that illustrates another one of Life’s Rich Recipes. Isn’t it sweet?
Speaking of birthdays, last year in March we had a little party at home with cake and ice cream to celebrate no one’s birthday. Our family goes through a birthday dry spell from January until July, so we decided to throw a birthday party for no one.
I wanted the kids to reflect on their summer one last time, so I made these little summertime top 3 cards. After we all filled out our cards and discussed what our favorite moments of the summer were, I turned the conversation around and asked them what they were most looking forward to when school starts.
This was a fun way start discussing the school year, and it really helped the kids open up about their goals, hopes and fears about heading back to the classroom. I think our whole party might have done a lot of good in helping ease some of their nervousness about the big day.
I know that Kara, in particular, is very anxious about her first day of Pre-K. She’s been confessing at night while I tuck her in that she is a little scared. I know that my big girl will be okay, and I assured her that I will be cheering her on through it all.
After the party festivities were over inside, I took the kids out back for a second surprise. I had a whole bucket of water balloons waiting for them! I wanted to give Evan and Kara the chance to send summer off with a SPLASH.
As soon as they started grabbing for the balloons I found a safe hiding spot on the porch and watched the summer fun ensue. It was so good to see them cut loose one more time before the back-to-school routine sets in next week.
