A box of yellow cake mix does most of the work. You stir in eggs, vanilla and softened butter, then add two whole cups of chocolate chips. They bake in about 10 minutes, just until the edges are set.

Here's what you'll need for these Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box of yellow cake mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Now that you've gathered your ingredients, let's get started!

Labeled ingredients: yellow cake mix, butter, eggs, vanilla and semi-sweet chocolate chips

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat Your Oven

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This ensures that your cake mix chocolate chip cookies will bake evenly and come out with a perfect texture.

Step 2: Prepare the Cake Mix

Take the 15.25-ounce box of yellow cake mix and empty it into a large mixing bowl. Set the bowl aside for now, as we'll come back to it shortly.

Step 3: Whisk Eggs and Add Vanilla

In a small bowl, whisk together the two large eggs and the teaspoon of vanilla extract. This mixture will add moisture and flavor to your cookies, enhancing their overall taste.

Step 4: Combine Ingredients

Now, pour the egg and vanilla mixture into the bowl with the cake mix. Add the softened 1/3 cup of unsalted butter as well. To ensure a smooth blend, use an electric mixer on medium speed to combine these ingredients. This will result in a dough-like consistency that forms the base of your cookies.

Step 5: Add Chocolate Chips

Using a wooden spoon, gently stir in the 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips a little at a time. This will evenly distribute the chocolate throughout the cake mix chocolate chip cookie dough, giving you a perfect chocolate chip experience with every bite.

Step 6: Scoop and Bake

Using rounded tablespoons of the cookie dough, drop them onto an un-greased cookie sheet. Be sure to leave about 2 inches of space between each cookie to allow for spreading during baking.

Step 7: Bake to Perfection

Place the cookie sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are set. Keep a close eye on them as they bake to avoid overcooking, which can lead to dry cookies.

Step 8: Cool Your Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Cookies and Enjoy

Once the cookies are done baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool for 1 minute on the cookie sheet. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. This cooling step helps the cookies set and achieve that perfect texture.

Now that you've successfully made your cake mix chocolate chip cookies, it's time to savor the sweet rewards of your baking efforts!

Tips for Perfect Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Cookies:

1. Use Room Temperature Butter:

Ensure that your butter is softened to room temperature before adding it to the cake mix. This will allow for better incorporation into the dough and result in a smoother texture.

2. Don't Overmix:

When using an electric mixer to combine the ingredients, be careful not to overmix the dough. Overmixing can lead to tough cookies. Mix until the ingredients are just combined.

3. Customize Your Chips:

While the recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips, feel free to experiment with different types of chocolate chips or even add other mix-ins like nuts, toffee bits, or dried fruit for unique flavor combinations.

4. Watch the Baking Time:

Keep a close eye on your cookies in the oven. They can go from perfectly baked to overdone in a matter of minutes. Take them out when the edges are set but the centers are still slightly soft.

1. Funfetti Cake Mix Cookies:

Swap out the yellow cake mix for a Funfetti cake mix to add a burst of colorful sprinkles to your cookies. These will be perfect for birthday parties or just to brighten up your day.

2. Double Chocolate Delight:

If you're a true chocolate lover, use a chocolate cake mix instead of yellow cake mix and add white chocolate chips in addition to the semi-sweet ones for a double chocolate cookie.

3. Peanut Butter Bliss:

Incorporate peanut butter chips or swirl in some creamy peanut butter into the dough for a delicious peanut butter chocolate chip cookie variation.

  1. These cookies are great – my family loved them.  And so easy.  I also made them with a devils food chocolate cake mix – fabulous!!!!

  2. My batter was VERY sticky. Seem to have turned out well (haven’t tried them yet), but definitely don’t look like the picture! Might add milk next time for a creamier texture!

  3. Tried these with my 11 year old son. I only had 1/4 cup of the butter, made up the rest in veggie oil, they came out fabulous, thank you!

  4. These cookies are amazing! I only had a devils food cake mix and I used that for double chocolate-chocolate chip cookies for a bake sale. I used a small scoop and made 4 dozen although only 3 dozen made it to the bake sale!! Thank you Crissy, for sharing.

  5. I just got these out of the oven and they are delicious! But my batter wasn’t dry, it was extremely sticky! Maybe because I completely melted the butter? No big deal. They are so easy a and so good!

  6. So you don’t follow the instructions of the cake mix?

  7. Brenda Perales says:

I made these today ans I am not sure what I did wrong….I added everything together and the mixture was dry and crumbly, I added some milk to get it to combine. They came out great and the family loves them….I was just wondering if you had an idea of what happened.

Thanks for the recipe…will be making again!

    1. They are a bit dry when you mix them but they come out just fine!

    2. If it helps, I used Duncan Hines cake mix, extra large eggs, and soft butter – my batter was not dry at all. Use a small scoop for perfectly round cookies.

  8. Hi Crissy,

Absolutely love the pictures of the stacked cookies with the starry background. How did you get that effect?
