That’s exactly what I did this week when I wanted a grill-inspired recipe to serve to friends and family that we’re hosting this 4th-of-July weekend!

easy 15 bean soup

I used the classic Hurst’s HamBeens 15 Bean Soup, (which my family already loves), and made it special by adding some sweet-style BBQ sauce, a diced green pepper, and some savory smoked sausage. Along with a couple other little tweaks.

When I tell you that this jazzed-up slow cooker meal is delicious, I mean, y’all… IT. IS. DELICIOUS!

Ingredients

The beautiful thing about Hurst’s HamBeens 15 Bean soup is that you have everything you need for a delicious meal right in the bag.

While the recipe is hearty and yummy on its own, I love adding a few extra ingredients to really amp up the flavor.

Here’s what you’ll need to re-create my BBQ 15 bean soup recipe in your own slow cooker.

  •  1 package Hurstโ€™s HamBeens 15 Bean Soup
  •  8 cups low sodium chicken broth
  •  1 pound smoked sausage, sliced
  •  1 large onion, diced
  •  1 large green onion, diced small
  • 1 large green pepper, diced
  •  1 (14.5 oz.) can diced tomatoes
  •  1 cup BBQ sauce (I like a sweet-style, brown sugar sauce)
ladle with soup

How to make BBQ 15 Bean Soup

  1. Start by sorting the beans and rinsing them thoroughly.
  2. Next, pour the beans into a slow cooker. Add your chicken broth, diced onion, and diced green pepper. Give everything a good stir! Cover and cook on high for about 4 hours, or until beans are tender. It’s very important to make sure your beans are tender at this point.
  3. After that, add the sliced smoked sausage, your flavor packet, the diced tomatoes, and the BBQ sauce. Stir and simmer an additional 30 minutes, or until sausage is heated through.
  4. To add a little freshness, color and additional flavor, garnish your bowls with some sliced green onions. It’s a nice touch if you’re serving this dish to guests.

When you’re in the grocery store, you’ll find the Hurst’s products in the dry beans area!

I always have a bag (or five) of their 15 bean soup in my pantry!

The sweet-style BBQ sauce in this recipe really adds a wonderful flavor. This dish is a great alternative to your traditional grill-fare.

I also love that it’s made in the slow cooker, which allows me plenty of freedom to hang out with my family and friends while the crock pot does all of the work!

I hope you love my slow cooker BBQ 15 bean soup recipe. It’s perfect for the 4th of July and all summer long!
